Question of the Month

The greatest thing about being a nature expert in training is that you can ALWAYS learn more! Is there something you've always wanted to know about in nature but didn't know who to ask? Post your question here. Once a month, one of our experts will tackle a new question from those submitted by kids just like you.

Do moths have mouths?

Asked by Ayicia. Answered by John Acorn.

Most moths do have mouths, in the form of a sucking tube proboscis that they use to slurp up flower nectar, and other juicy foods. Some small "primitive" moths have jaws as well, but most moths do not. And then there are a number of moths (including the most spectacular moths, such as the giant silkworm moths and some sphinx moths) that have no mouth at all! They only live for a week or so, and survive off the nutrients they stored up as caterpillars.
