2010 Get to Know Contest Launch

Nationwide on Earth Day, April 22, 2010

Help us kick off the 2010 Get to Know Contest, which will celebrate the tenth Anniversary of the Get to Know Contest and will also commemorate International Year of Biodiversity.

 

Launch locations

Ottawa, ON Canadian Museum of Nature - Premier Launch Event

April 22, 2010; 9:30a.m.-12:00p.m. approx.

Nature Canada, Wildlife Habitat Canada, Robert Bateman Public School and featured guest Alan Bateman will be joined by youth who will engage with their wild neighbors through fun, interactive activities. A tree planting ceremony, in dedication to Robert Bateman, will also take place and youth will have the opportunity to work on various Get to Know activities, such as wildlife sketching with Alan Bateman.

Vancouver, BC Vancouver Aquarium

April 22, 2010; 9:30a.m.-11:30a.m.

Students participants will enter the Aquaquest classroom to hear from Aquarium presenters and Get to Know Contest partners. The students will then participate in a mural painting activity with marine-life pointillist  artist Rogest and get some hands-on interaction with creatures from the wet lab.

Sidney, BC Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre

April 22, 2010; 9:30a.m.-1:00p.m.

Featured guest Robert Bateman will be in attendance for this event to kick-off the 2010 Get to Know Contest. A visiting class will particpate in a beach walk activity and then will be given time to explore the Discovery Centre. The official contest launch ceremony will begin at 11:00am; general visiting public are welcome to attend. Afterwards, the students will be given time to work on artwork entries for the contest.

Aldergrove, BC Greater Vancouver Zoo

April 22, 2010; 11:00a.m.-2:00p.m.

Local students will be invited to learn about some of their wild neighbours through fun, interactive activities at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Students will also be given the opportunity to work on creative entries for the contest.

Event will take place at the Shaw studio located in Prospera Place. Specials guests will include representatives from Okanagan College, The Nature Trust of BC, as well as City of Kelowna Mayor Sharon Shepherd.

Calgary, AB Langevin School

April 20, 2010; 12:45p.m.-1:45p.m.

The Calgary Zoo and some wild neighbours will visit Langevin School to particpate in the Get to Know Contest launch event, and youth will take part in creating art and writing entries for the contest.

Edmonton, AB Royal Alberta Musuem

May 2, 2010; 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m.

Event will feature interpretive artefacts, touch-tanks, as well as live animals. A resident artist and gallery interpreter will run 3 art workshops throughout the day and be available to visitors who would like to work on contest submissions. Art materials will be available; cameras are welcome.

Edmonton, AB John Janzen Nature Centre

May 2, 2010, 11:00a.m.-5:00p.m.

The 2010 Get to Know Contest will be featured during the John Janzen Nature Centre's "Planet Party - Magic in the Air" event. There will be music, magic, games, nature walks, presentations, crafts, and even cake and party favours! Wildlife specialists from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton and members from the Edmonton Naturalization Group will be in attendance as well.

Edmonton, AB Valley Zoo

May 9, 2010; 12:00p.m.-4:00p.m.

The 2010 Get to Know Contest will be featured during the Valley Zoo's "Mother's Day Magic - The Zoo becomes a Spa!" event. Moms can sign up to have a complimentary manicure or massage, while the children can watch some of their favourite zoo animals recieve a special spa treatment of their own. Activities also include a magic show, scenic tour on the Zoo train, face painting, and educational animal talks.

Edmonton, AB Muttart Conservatory

May 9, 2010; 1:00p.m.-4:00p.m.

The 2010 Get to Know Contest will be featured during the Muttart Conservatory's "Mother's Day - Blooms, Bears & Butterflies" event. You will have the opportunity to create a bouquet of paper flowers in the art shop activity area. Also, turn your favourite teddy bear into a butterfly as you create wings fit for your bear.

Regina, SK Royal Saskatchewan Museum

April 25, 2010; 1:00p.m.-4:00p.m.

This event will feature music, crafts, games, etc., and will include a Get to Know table for sketching, writing, taking photos and a digital photo upload station. The formal launch presentation will take place at 2:00p.m.

Toronto, ON Tommy Thompson Park

May 8, 2010; 8:00a.m.-4:00p.m.

The Tommy Thompson Park Spring Bird Festival is the largest birding festival in the GTA. This year's festival will be packed with great Get to Know activities including: bird hikes, live bird banding demonstrations, educational displays, local bird & nature organization displays, specialized workshops, tree, shrub and wildflower plantings, kids activities and special Get to Know activities for Guides and Scouts.

Toronto, ON Royal Ontario Museum

April 22, 2010; 9:30a.m.-2:00p.m. approx.

Event will include an introduction to the Hands-on Biodiversity Gallery and the Schad Gallery of Biodiversity, and time to work on entries for the contest.

Celebrate Biodiversity! Try your hand at capturing nature through art and photographs at this interactive family event.  Learn about the New Brunswick Museum Biodiversity Blitz and take a close look at some amazing creatures that call New Brunswick home.  Celebrate Earth Day at the New Brunswick Museum, and "Get to Know" your wild neighbours”! Free admission. Refreshments, prizes.

Moncton, NB Magnetic Hill Zoo

April 22, 2010; 9:00a.m.-3:00p.m.

Local students will particpate in Get to Know themed creative activities. National award-winning author Jacob Berkowitz will to do a 30 minute show entitled "Is there an alien Earth out there?"; he will also speak on creative writing and expression. Photographer Clarence Nowlan will do a workshop with the students on Digital Photography and take them through the zoo in search of dynamic photo opportunities. Nelson Poirier, a local bird expert and columnist for the Moncton Times & Transcript, will give a talk on local species.
