Waterton Lakes National Park, August 23-27

Twenty-two winners of the Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest attended the Get to Know Art & Nature camp at Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, hosted by Parks Canada, on August 23-27, 2010.
Art & Nature Camp participants, aged 12 to 18, learned wildlife art techniques from Robert Bateman and Wyland via videoconferencing, took part in workshops led by local artists and poets, and hiked a wilderness trail that crosses over from Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada into Glacier National Park in the United States. Together, the two parks form Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was created in 1932 as a symbol of peace and friendship between Canada and the United States.
Youth also created a mural on the wall of the Waterton Heritage Centre to commemorate the centennial of the Waterton community. The unveiling ceremony took place on Friday, August 27. Lesley and Brad Dalgarno describe their son Quinn’s experience at the Art & Nature Camp: “He had an amazing time; described the wildlife, the hikes and excursions. He has been really affected by the Rockies and that region of Canada… It was a week he will never forget.”
Collaboration between the Robert Bateman Get to Know Program and Parks Canada made it possible for Get to Know contest winners to enjoy this unique nature learning experience. The first Art & Nature camp for Canadian Get to Know Contest winners was held in 2009 at Jasper National Park; this year, Parks Canada extended the invitation to American winners as well.
